Local Entrepreneurs Launch “The Book Shack”

A Progressive New Bookstore

-Venture Will Resuscitate Borders Bookstore Space

 At the Independence Mall-

October 20, 2011—Local entrepreneurs Erik Christensen and Jason Zutaut have teamed up to launch a new brainchild–The Book Shack, a value-driven bookstore with a twist.  The new bookstore will occupy the 20,000-square-foot space at the Independence Mall that previously housed Borders—a big box superstore chain that recently closed its doors. The “Opening” is planned for Friday, October 28nd  Joining us through the Holidays will be the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse Bins as we try to gather non perishable items for the families in need.

“We’re betting on books,” said Jason Zutaut, Co-Founder of The Book Shack.  “New technologies in reading are great but they don’t replace the satisfaction of flipping through the pages of a great book.  Technology has made book pricing very competitive, so our goal is to deliver greatly discounted books—with a twist.”

That twist is to bring books to life through storytelling, theatre, poetry slams, author readings, and lectures.  The Book Shack will also host special events such as comedy shows, psychics, and musical guests.  Local radio shows will also be aired from The Book Shack.

“Small business is the backbone of our economy—and while there are challenges in starting a new venture during such turbulent economic times—there are also opportunities,” said Erik Christenson, Co-Founder.

“As the father of 5 kids, I really want The Book Shack to be fun for the whole family.  Our goal is to provide the community with books that are so reasonable that reading is the one thing that you won’t have to give up in this economy.  We’re also very excited about discovering new talent and will devote shelf space to self-published authors.”

The Book Shack will include The Cupcake Shack featuring pastry chef Phillip Caramello. The lounge space has been expanded to encourage exploration of new books and a Story Land for kids has been added, complete with tables and floor cushions. Another area has been designed to accommodate book club meetings, which can be reserved in advance. OnStage has also been designed by Loretta LaRoche Productions for live performances.

“Our concept is to take what we like from the Borders business model—like the large space and competitively priced books—and take it to the next level—most of our books will be discounted by 60%,” said Erik. “Our goal is to engage our customer with a new type of shopping experience by providing a meeting place where they can connect, learn, and explore.”

In addition to co-founding The Book Shack, Erik Christensen serves as President & Founder of Loretta LaRoche Productions, a global talent agency and production company in the entertainment industry located in Plymouth, MA.  Productions include the Wicked Funny Comedy Tour, He Said Said Comedy Tour, Loretta LaRoche’s One Woman Show, Trace Adkins, Lee Ann Womack, Peter Wolf, Joan Baez, Grand Fund Railroad, Rich Little, The Temptations, and Frankie Vallie.  On a local level, Loretta LaRoche Productions also produces the Plymouth Rock Comedy Series and Festivals.

Jason Zutaut, Co-Founder of The Book Shack, is the founder and president of Book Enterprises, LLC. of New Bedford, MA, a national leader in the high-quality close-out and remainder book industry.  Clients include Barnes and Nobles, Ocean State Job Lot, Christmas Tree Shops, and Home Goods.  He has also earned the distinction of being listed in Inc. Magazine’s Top 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in America.
